Cape Point est la fin de la péninsule du Cap, qui fait partie du parc national de Table Mountain en Afrique du Sud. En 2004, Cape Point est devenu une partie de 553 000 hectares Cape Floral site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO.
Cape Point est seulement à environ 30 miles de Cape Town, mais le trajet peut durer entre une et deux heures, selon le nombre de fois que vous arrêtez. Une excursion d'une journée complète sur la péninsule permet de voir l'île aux phoques de Hout Bay, les pingouins de Boulders Beach, le cap de Bonne-Espérance et les jardins de Kirstenbosch.
Une importante anecdote - bien que beaucoup de gens pensent que le cap de Bonne-Espérance est la pointe sud de l'Afrique et la ligne de démarcation entre les océans Indien et Atlantique, cette distinction va en réalité au cap Aghulas, qui est à environ 100 miles à l'est. Le cap de Bonne-Espérance est la pointe sud-ouest de l'Afrique.
Comme le montrent ces photos, une journée à Cape Point est un "must see" quand vous visitez Cape Town. C'est une belle région, avec une faune diversifiée comme des babouins et des antilopes africaines.
Le cap de Bonne-Espérance est l'un des trois points à la fin de la péninsule du Cap - Cape Point, Cape Maclear et le cap de Bonne-Espérance.

Vous pouvez marcher depuis ce parking jusqu'au phare, mais nous avons pris le funiculaire car nous avions encore 100 marches jusqu'au phare après le train.

Train funiculaire hollandais volant vers le phare de Cape Point
Ce funiculaire est nommé le "Flying Dutchman". Beaucoup choisissent de marcher jusqu'au phare plutôt que de payer les frais, qui est d'environ 3 $ dans chaque sens.
Le funiculaire porte le nom de l'une des légendes les plus célèbres de la péninsule du Cap, un navire nommé Flying Dutchman. En 1680, le navire a sombré en essayant de contourner le cap par gros temps. Le capitaine, Hendrik van der Decken, jura pendant que son navire coulait qu'il contournerait le cap s'il le prenait pour toujours. Aujourd'hui, certains croient qu'il a tenu parole car beaucoup ont vu le Hollandais volant dans les eaux du Cap.

Debout sur Cape Point, vous pouvez presque faire semblant de voir le cap Agulhas, le point le plus au sud de l'Afrique, qui est à 100 miles à l'est.

Les babouins sont des animaux sauvages et devraient être évités
Les babouins sont de grands primates et même s'ils sont mignons, ils peuvent être très dangereux, voler des caméras ou même blesser les touristes.

Phare de Cape Point
Ce phare se trouve au sommet de Cape Point et a été utilisé de 1860-1919.
Le phare de travail a été déplacé à Cape Diaz après le naufrage du navire portugais le Lusitania en 1911. Cape Point était plus haut, mais est souvent enveloppé dans le brouillard et la brume.

Il est à plus de 100 pas de la station de funiculaire supérieure au sommet de Cape Point, mais la vue en vaut la peine.

Vue de Diaz Point de Cape Point, Afrique du Sud
Le nouveau phare se trouve sur la pointe Diaz plutôt que sur le sommet de Cape Point, car Cape Point est souvent couvert de nuages.
Cape Point est 249 mètres au-dessus de l'océan, tandis que Cape Diaz est à seulement 87 mètres de haut. Le phare d'origine était au sommet de Cape Point, mais il est souvent couvert de nuages et de brume. Après l'épave du navire portugais Lusitania en 1911, le phare a été déplacé à Diaz Point. Notez que le Lusitania portugais n'est pas le même navire que le Cunard Ocean Liner Lusitania qui a été coulé au large des côtes irlandaises en 1915.

Ce bébé babouin escalade un mur entourant une maison d'habitation sur le Cap. Les babouins pénètrent dans les portes et les fenêtres déverrouillées et peuvent détruire l'intérieur d'une maison.

Autruche
La route vers Cape Point passe juste à côté de cette ferme d'autruches. La ferme vend des œufs d'autruche décorés et des produits fabriqués à partir de peau d'autruche.

Autruches mâles et femelles
Autruches femelles et mâles alternent assis sur leurs oeufs. La femelle est de couleur plus claire car elle s'assoit sur les œufs pendant la journée, et le mâle est plus sombre parce qu'il s'assoit sur les œufs la nuit.
